Alpari GOLD Accounts - A New Gold Standard in Trading
Alpari's "Gold Accounts" provide an exciting new alternative to traditional metal investment accounts.
As opposed to our other trading accounts, which are denominated in either USD or EUR, "Gold Accounts" are instead denominated in GLD, a unit worth one thousandth of the spot price of gold (or 0.001 of the XAUUSD spot price).
Deposits made to a Gold Account are converted to GLD, and all peformance indicators and measures of your account balance and will be in GLD, rather than EUR or USD. Other than that, there aren't any major differences between these accounts and Alpari's standard currency-denominated accounts. You can still trade currencies and spot metals (including gold - XAUUSD).

The Advantages of the "Gold Account"
- Protection against Market Fluctuations: Since central banks limit the sale of gold (after the Washington Agreement of 1999) and world gold reserves are relatively small, investments in gold provide protection against sharp fluctuations in currency rates.
- Greater Returns during Downturns: During periods of economic or political instability, the price of gold tends to rise as capital is increasingly invested in precious metals.
- Asset Diversification: Diversify your assets by developing a portfolio of gold and currency-denominated accounts.

Calculating the Deposit
Let's say you open a classic.mt4 account with GLD as the deposit currency, making a deposit of 1,000 USD to this account.
Your funds will be converted to GLD at our current rate, which you can find in the "Conversion Rates" section of myAlpari.
Let's say our GLD/USD conversion rate at the moment of the deposit is 1.33 (1 GLD = 1.33 USD). Your deposit of 1,000 USD will converted to 751.88 GLD (1,000/1.33 = 751.88).
With your GLD-denominated account, you will be able to trade every instrument available on classic.mt4 accounts, including Gold Spot (XAUUSD).
Please Note: If you are manually calculating the margin requirements for your Gold Accounts, 1 GLD is equal to .001 of the spot price of gold.

Margin Requirements
Let's suppose you buy 0.1 lot of EURUSD at 1.3846 where the current quote for GLDUSD is 1.3345.
The notional cost of your position is 10,000 units of the base currency, in this case EUR.
You can use the price at which the position was opened and the price of GLDUSD at the moment the position was opened to determine the cost in GLD. This will be 10,000 * the price at which the position was opened /the price of GLDUSD: 10,000*1.3345/1.3345= 10,375.42 GLD.
Let's say you are trading on a classic.mt4 account. In accordance with the Margin Requirements, the position (with a notional value of 10,375.45 GLD) will be opened with 1:500 leverage.
In this case, the actual margin reserved to open the position will be equal to the the notional value of the position in GLD divided by the leverage: 10,375.42/500=20.75 GLD.

How Profit is Calculated
Let's assume that you bought 0.1 EURUSD at 1.3846 and closed the position at 1.4150. Your profit is 1.4150-1.3845= 305 pips.
One pip (change in the price of 0.0001) with a position of 0.1 lots is equal to one unit of the quote currency, which in this case, will be 1 USD.
Let's assume that GLDUSD was 1.3512 when the position was closed.
Your profit for this trade will be 305 USD/ the price of GLDUSD: 305/1.3512= 225.73 GLD.

How Investment Returns are Calculated
Let's say that the spot price of gold has increased from 1,330.00 to 1,351.20 since you deposited 1,000 USD.
This means that the dollar equivalent of your "Gold Account", without taking into account any trading, is now 751.88 * 1.3512 = 1015.94 USD.
